Early life and Education
On December 22, 1922, Engstrom was born in Chicago, Illinois. His mother, Ruth (née Jacobson), was of German ancestry, and his father, William, was a Swedish immigrant.
Robert and Richard were his two brothers. When Engstrom was three years old, his father then passed away, and shortly after, his mother remarried.
Engstrom subsequently recalled that his stepfather, John Swanson, was aggressive and that he “never felt like [he] belonged in that household.”
In his senior year of high school, Engstrom basically quit. During World War II, he was a member of the US Marine Corps and was wounded by shrapnel while serving in the Solomon Islands. He completed high school and enrolled at North Park College after the war.
Career
As a youth pastor, Engstrom started out his profession. He helped establish the Rockford, Illinois, branch of Youth for Christ International in 1955.
From 1955 until 1960, he was the group’s national director of training. He created the idea of “servant leadership” in this capacity, which would later become one of his defining concepts.
Engstrom quit Youth for Christ in 1960 to focus solely on speaking motivational speeches.
He rose to fame as a result of his publications and motivational speeches on leadership. He helped found the National Training Laboratories (NTL), a nonprofit with a focus on leadership training, in 1966.
Under Engstrom’s direction, NTL expanded quickly; by 1970, it had trained more than 100,000 employees from more than 5,000 businesses.
Engstrom left NTL in 1971 to work for World Vision International, a christian relief agency. From 1971 to 1974, he was the company’s executive vice president. He oversaw World Vision’s assistance efforts in this capacity throughout the Bangladesh War of Independence and the 1973 coup d’état in Chile.
He also contributed to the creation of World Vision’s International Development Department, which was in charge of managing the company’s international development initiatives.
Engstrom came back to the country in 1974 to take the helm of Pasadena, California’s Fuller Theological Seminary. He also held this position for four years before quitting as a result of conflicts with some of the seminary’s professors.
Engstrom then co-founded the Leadership Institute in 1978, a non-profit institution of higher learning with a focus on educating conservative activists. Under Engstrom’s direction, the institute expanded quickly; by 1984, it had trained more than 100,000 people from all 50 states and more than 60 other nations.
