Early life and Education

On December 22, 1922, Engstrom was born in Chicago, Illinois. His mother, Ruth (née Jacobson), was of German ancestry, and his father, William, was a Swedish immigrant.

Robert and Richard were his two brothers. When Engstrom was three years old, his father then passed away, and shortly after, his mother remarried.
