Man Utd: Harry Maguire still set for summer move

Harry Maguire was involved in a bizarre story last night, with reports suggesting that he would be heading to Aston Villa.

A purported TalkSport reporter – who has since taken the publication’s name out of his bio – said that Manchester United’s captain was on the verge of a move to the Midlands side.

But the news was later squashed, quite robustly, by other outlets such as the Manchester Evening News and Fabrizio Romano.

One report dubbed the speculation as ‘feverish’ – first generated by a picture of Maguire spotted in Birmingham over the weekend when in fact he had gone to ‘The Belfry to play golf.’

Maguire has fallen down the central defensive pecking order at Man Utd, and though the news of him leaving in January was played down, as we reported before, manager Erik ten Hag does want to move on the player – as well as others – in the summer window when the season is over.

We reported as far back as June that Antony Elanga could be sold but with a buyback clause or loaned. Fred, Brandon Williams, Facundo Pellistri, Phil Jones, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Tahith Chong, and Scott McTominay also don’t have a future, as Ten Hag continues his vast overhaul.

Maguire started in United’s last Premier League match against Bournemouth and has been dropped from the club’s starting XI, playing just 384 minutes of football so far this season in the Premier League.

The defender performed well for his country at the Qatar 2022 World Cup as England made it to the quarter-finals of the competition before being beaten by eventual finalists France.

We had heard there was some interest in the player from abroad but links have dried up since.

Ten Hag’s want of personality

We were the first site to bring you the news that Ten Hag is wanting a complete overhaul of the squad – saying that the Dutchman has his own idea of the type of players he wants in – and those he wants out.

Ten Hag spoke openly about his ambition of a new Man Utd side in a recent press conference.

He told Voetbal International: “The club has bought an unimaginable number of players in recent years who have not been good enough.

“Most purchases have been average – and at United average is not good enough. United’s shirt weighs heavily.”
