Manchester United will make Crystal Palace goalkeeper Jack Butland their first signing of the January transfer window.

England international goalkeeper Butland is set to arrive on a six-month loan deal from the Selhurst Park club and will fill a void left by Martin Dubravka, who departed the club in January, having grown frustrated by his lack of game time at Old Trafford.

Butland, meanwhile, is a player who has been linked with a move to the Red Devils previously, with the 29-year-old having once been regarded as one of his country’s finest shot-stoppers as he picked up nine international caps while with Birmingham and Stoke.

Butland’s long-term Man Utd ambition

It was during his time in the Potteries that he was linked with the Old Trafford side before, and his comments at that time will leave fans pleased that they have signed a player who is eager to represent Man Utd.

“I want to play in the Champions League and I want to win trophies. There’s no reason why we can’t win trophies at Stoke, we’ll try and win some cups and do as well as we can, but I obviously have ambitions,” Butland told talkSPORT in 2017.

“A club like Manchester United, or whoever it may be… United are, for me, the biggest club in the world and you have to take those things in consideration. But if it’s right, if it’s not, I’ll make those decisions at the time.”

United may not be in the Champions League this season, but Butland will doubtless be working his hardest under Erik ten Hag to impress sufficiently to ensure the move is made into a more permanent one.

Indeed, Man Utd are angling to return to Europe’s top competition next term after winning six successive games and pushing themselves into the top four of the Premier League. And if they are back in the Champions League, it is obvious Butland wants to be there with them.
