The 2022-23 season has seen a whole host of big-name stars move on a free transfer.

In the Premier League, ahead of the new campaign, Chelsea lost both Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen, who signed for Real Madrid and Barcelona, respectively, while Alexandre Lacazette returned to Lyon and Nemanja Matic signed for Roma. Christian Eriksen joined Manchester United in his second free transfer move of 2022, taking Jesse Lingard’s place in the squad, with the Englishman joining Nottingham Forest, also on a free transfer.

From Italy, Ivan Perisic signed for Tottenham and Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernadeschi both jetted out to the MLS to Toronto. Napoli also lost Dries Mertens on a free transfers, with the Belgian international joining Galatasaray.

Paulo Dybala left Juventus in tears and signed for Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma. But, the Turin-based club made two high-profile free transfer signings to make up for it. Juventus signed PSG’s Angel Di Maria and re-signed Paul Pogba from Manchester United.

In France, highly-rated young midfielder Boubacar Kamara joined Aston Villa, whilst in Germany, Niklas Sule left Bayern Munich for Borussia Dortmund and Corentin Tolisso returned to Lyon.

From Spain, Isco signed for Sevilla, Gareth Bale moved to Los Angeles FC and Ousmane Dembele renewed his deal at Barcelona after becoming a free agent.

Not one of them commanded a transfer fee.
